Online fundraising consultant Ted Hart reports that online giving in the USA in 2007 reached an estimated $10.44 billion. Global online giving in the same year passed the $20 billion dollar mark.

Hart, author of the recently published People to People Fundraising, has been esimating online giving in the USA and around the world since 2001. His figures are based on first-hand reports he receives from charities and from third-party research projects.

The $10.44 billion figure for 2007 represents a a 52% increase over 2006 estimates. Hart puts this down to "significant increases in online giving for both small and large organizations, creativity in strategy and the unprecedented use of the Internet by individuals for non-disaster and disaster support efforts".
