Housing and homeless charity Focus Ireland has raised €400,000 from its annual Four Peaks challenge, up from €380,000 last year. Over 500 people took part in climbing four mountains in 36 hours.
Such is the demand for the event that Focus plan to hold the Four Peaks challenge twice in one year and are inviting entries for this September.
Participants in the climb take part in teams with each asked to raise €4500 in sponsorship. During last weekend’s event climbers scaled Carrauntoohil(Kerry), Mweelrea(Mayo), Slieve Donard(Down) and Lugnaquillia(Wicklow).
Focus fundraising director Mark Mellett said this was the first time they had run the event more than once in one year, ascribing its success to a combination of fun and achievement.
Focus raised €6.3 million in 2007 from events, donations and corporate support.
