New online learning resource for charity workers

Howard Lake | 14 February 2008 | News

An online learning network is to be established to help address “the intractable learning deficit” in the voluntary and community centre. The service will be designed specifically for charity sector workers and volunteers and will concentrate on informal learning.
With funding from the Big Lottery Fund, the City Centre for Charity Effectiveness Trust will oversee the three-year project, which will be implemented by Cass Business School’s Centre for Charity Effectiveness (Cass CCE) headed by its Director, Professor Ian Bruce.
There is little doubt that the charity sector faces skills shortages. The sector as a whole spends as little as 1% of its wage bill on training and developing talent which compares with 3% in the commercial and public sectors.
The new service will target in particular small community groups, 90% of which now have broadband access, which work on small budgets, with hard to reach members/clients. Most services will be free.
The e-Learning service is expected to have three ‘Zones’ covering information, problem solving and study. It will offer a wide range of online learning tools and services including discussion groups, peer question/answer sessions, expert clinics, courses, lectures, and blogs, forums, webinars and wikis.
