Fundraising Conference Sheds Light on 'New Philanthropists'

Howard Lake | 8 November 2007 | Newswire

Highlights of the Institute of Fundraising’s (‘Institute’) Major Gift Fundraising conference, to be held on Thursday 22 November at the Royal Geographic Society, London, include sessions on the emerging ‘new philanthropists’ and major donor fundraising beyond London.
Over the last few years, philanthropy has become more diverse: major donors come from different ethnic backgrounds and many of them are considerably younger. The conference will examine motivations for giving for ‘new philanthropists’ and approaching and managing a ‘new generation’ of donors.
Additionally, charities working outside London often find it more difficult to secure major gifts; a high percentage of wealthy prospects are based in London and it seems easier to approach people in a large city. Delegates to the conference will learn to identify the similarities and differences between inner-city and rural major gift fundraising, and identifying and attracting major donors to their areas. Sir Tom Farmer, CBE will also give a keynote address about what makes major donors ‘tick’.
The conference also covers further topics including:
· Presenting a compelling case for support
· Making the ask
· How to progress donors to the next level
· Developing relationships with longevity
Major Donor Fundraisers, Managers and Officers, Development Managers and Officers, Trusts and Foundation Fundraisers, Chief Executives of smaller organisations and anyone involved in donor development or high-level fundraising are all encouraged to attend.
Sandi Wilson, Chief Executive, Sandi Wilson consultants and Chair of the Institute of Fundraising Major Donor Groups, who is chairing the day’s event, says:
“I am very pleased that the Institute of Fundraising is organizing this event to help organisations attract and sustain relationships with major donors. The event will demonstrate to all those attending about some of the diversities of our many generous supporters in the sector. This event will bring together a mix of old and new perspectives on major donor fundraising and I’m sure that the day’s case histories will be of enormous value to fundraisers. ”
Kirsty Thomson, Head of Events at the Institute of Fundraising, says:
Major Gift fundraising is an effective means by which charities can increase their revenue. This event will provide fundraisers with the confidence to engage with major donors by providing information and advice on effective techniques.”
The extensive programme features presentations from: Christian Aid, Crisis, Impetus Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support, Merlin, The Prince’s Trust, Quartet Community Foundation, Sue Ryder Care and Theresa Lloyd Associates.
