Local motorsport heroes win their class
15/5/06
Two of the North East’s finest motorsport heroes sponsored by Patterson Ford have won their class on the Welsh International Rally, the third round of this year’s British Historic Rally Championship (BHRC).
Ken Forster and John Stanger-Leathes beat the nearest rival in their class by one minute and 24 seconds. They were also up against one of the leading post-historic three-litre Porsche 911s, which they managed to beat by three seconds to claim seventh spot overall.
Ken and John are competing in the championship in a classic 1972, Post Historic” Ford Escort Mexico Mk1. Patterson Ford, the Newcastle-based motor retailer, is supporting the Historics-Rallying” team by providing them with the fuel required to run the vehicle and its accompanying tow van.
This year’s Post-Historic Championship comprises a series of nine rallies in various locations all over the UK. The most prestigious historic rally championship in the UK, BHRC is governed by the Motor Sports Association (MSA) and organised by the Historic Rally Car Register (HRCR).
Ken said: We were pleased to have beaten all of the historic category cars including the overall winner and previous BHRC Champion, Dessie Nutt, in his well-known yellow two-litre 911 by more than one minute. We were slightly worried after suffering a heavy landing from a big jump during the penultimate stage but our trusty Ford pulled us through”.
Ashley Winter, managing director of Patterson Ford, added: Ken and John are a skilled team and have enjoyed great success in this sport. We are proud to back two local heroes who have successfully completed a half-century of high-profile rallies together in this brilliantly robust vehicle.”
