Great British Duck Race raises £200,000 for charities

Howard Lake | 5 September 2007 | News

On Sunday 2 September 165,000 plastic ducks floated down the River Thames for the inaugural ‘Great British Duck Race’, beating the Guinness World Record for the ‘World’s Biggest Charity Duck Race,’ and raising over £200,000 for over 450 good causes.

Two thousand spectators watched the face at Hampton Court. Duck number 157791 won the first prize of £10,000, with 29 others winning prizes including £2,000 of furnishings supplied by lead sponsor Bathstore.

Over 450 charities from across the UK were involved and benefited from the funds raised. Once the winning ducks were verified by a Guinness World Record adjudicator, a clean-up operation began with the ducks being hooked, packed and ready to be used again next year.

The organisers, who worked closely with the River Thames Alliance and the Environment Agency, say they will run the event annually.
