After a failed career in football, and then as a ZX Spectrum programmer, I joined the voluntary sector in 1990 and have worked in fundraising ever since. I was fortunate enough to hold senior fundraising roles within a number of major charities including Oxfam, Practical Action and Habitat for Humanity International and to sit on the Disasters Emergency Committee. I founded John Grain Associates in 2004.
My first job at Oxfam was opening mail and banking cheques and gave me a fantastic insight into the many motivations of folk to donate to charity. It is probably for this reason I have always had a passion for what inspires people to give and how charities look after their supporters – which often is not very well!
