Amnesty International UK is now accepting instant mobile phone donations of up to £800 using LUUP’s online donation system. As part of an initial appeal, LUUP will contribute up to 20% on top of each donation made to the organisation.

LUUP is the first provider to offer charities a mobile payment option that allows individual donations of up to £800. Charities using the system receive a greater proportion of the donation than those using PSMS (premium-rated text messages) methods, where extra charges are added to users’ mobile phone bills.

For example, a £5 donation via LUUP to Amnesty is worth 15% more than if the donation had been made using PSMS.

Katie Hart, New Business Development Manager for Amnesty International UK, said: “In the past, we’ve used SMS to create interest in joining our organisation and we believe that the convenience factor associated with being able to make a donation via a mobile phone should make it a very popular payment option.”

She added that, until now, Amnesty had avoided PSMS “as we felt its value was questionable and that it was too costly for donors. But LUUP presents a mobile payments option that is not only easy-to-use and very secure but also ensures the donation ends up with those who need it most.”

Christopher Lovold, UK Director at Contopronto, the Norwegian company providing the LUUP service, said: “Any innovation that makes the donation process easier has been welcomed by those charities with which we are working. Donors also appreciate the simplicity of LUUP.”

The first Amnesty International campaign where it will be possible to donate using LUUP has been launched today and focuses on highlighting atrocities perpetrated against the people of Darfur. Donations to the campaign will help Amnesty International to lobby the United Nations and the government of Sudan to deliver an effective peace-keeping force in the region as soon as possible.
