DSC offers one-day conference on new Charities Act

The Directory of Social Change is to host a one-day conference to help small and medium-sized charities in particular get to grips with the new Charities Act, “the first event of its kind”.

Campbell Robb, Director General of the Office of the Third Sector, will give the introductory address. There will then be a plenary: “Friend or Foe? How should the Commission Regulate?” The Act gives the Charity Commission fresh powers to interpret and enforce the new law, so how do they intend to keep tabs on the thousands of charities on their register? Rosie Chapman, Director of Policy and Strategy at the Charity Commission and Stephen Lloyd of Bates Wells & Braithwaite solicitors will discuss the implications.

A choice of workshops includes demonstrating public benefit, improving fundraising practice without government intervention, transparency, and collaborative working. There is also a session which will provide “a no-nonsense, whistlestop tour of the Act” so smaller charities can see which of the provisions matter to them.
