Tesco collection raises £250,000 in two days

Age Concern volunteers have raised a quarter of a million pounds in just two days through collections in Tesco stores.

Collections were held at more than 600 stores on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 June 2005, with 250 Age Concerns around the UK providing around 8,000 volunteers. The charity’s biggest ever fundraising drive was made possible because Age Concern is the Tesco Charity of the Year.

Tim Mason, Chairman of the Tesco Charity Trust, said: “We are delighted that Age Concern has raised so much, thanks to the generosity of our customers, the hard work of our staff and the Age Concern volunteers.”

The charity hopes to raise £2 million through its Tesco Charity of the Year partnership in 2005.

Every year, Tesco adopts a national charity with a strong community presence to be the Tesco Charity of the Year. This becomes the main focus for staff fundraising, which receives a 20% top-up from the Tesco Charity Trust.
