MS Society launches first full access fundraising walk

Howard Lake | 6 February 2007 | Newswire

5th February 2007 : – – The Multiple Sclerosis Society is launching the UK’s first ever full-access fundraising walk. Wheel & Walk is a brand new 3.5 km challenge open to everyone – including wheelchair users, those using walking aids and families with young children in buggies and pushchairs. The event is open to all ages and special facilities will be provided to ensure every participant is looked after and made to feel welcome.
The events will be held over two weekends at some of our most beautiful National Trust properties in the UK:
· 12th May in Stourhead, Wiltshire
· 2nd June at Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire
By launching Wheel & Walk, the Multiple Sclerosis Society is allowing people with disabilities to participate and contribute to the fundraising efforts of the organisation.
Simon Gillespie, Chief Executive at the MS Society said: Wheel and Walk opens up the MS Society’s events to those more severely affected by MS, and I’m very pleased that we can now give more of our supporters the chance to take part in a great day out to raise much-needed funds.”
Sanjay Chadha, Trustee of the MS Society, who has been using a wheelchair for about eight years, agrees: A large part of coping with MS – or any disability – is to live life as fully as possible, which for many people means getting out and exercising, setting goals and succeeding in challenges. It is not about sitting on the sidelines and watching everyone doing everything for you.”
It is hoped that these two new events will attract fundraisers from around the country, in particular those previously excluded from such challenges, in order to reach this year’s target of £20,000.
Running alongside these events are two 10km Littlefoot walks which hope to raise a further £90,000. The MS Society’s well established 50km Bigfoot walk will take place this year on 11th and 12th August, alongside a third Littlefoot walk, in Cheshire.
