How many philanthropy-related blogs?

Howard Lake | 11 December 2006 | Blogs

How many nonprofit or philanthropy-related blogs are there? In Blogs on the rise in The Chronicle of Philanthropy on 7 December 2006, Peter Panepento writes:
“Nobody knows for sure how many blogs are devoted to nonprofit issues, but the best guess by people who write blogs is that about 100 are now in operation. That is an infinitesimal fraction of the estimated 12 million blogs available on the Internet, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, in Washington.”
While he might be thinking purely of US-based blogs, but I believe that the number is actually two or three times that figure.
Of course, it all comes down to what one means by “blogs devoted to nonprofit issues”. Does it include blogs by nonprofit staff? Or is it just blogs written about the nonprofit sector?
To demonstrate the number of blogs already available visit:
* the blogroll at OpenCharityBlog
* the links at CharityBlog
* Charity blog sites – shall we build a list? on Sarah Hughes’ blog on UK Fundraising
The above get us easily to the 100+ mark, and those are primarily just the UK blogs. Then of course there are the existing UK Fundraising blogs (Streetlife, Kevin Kibble, Fundraising Ireland 2006, Ian MacQuillin), plus several more lined up to go live soon.
I think the figure of 100 completely underestimates the number blogs devoted to nonprofit issues in existence.
