The Children’s Society has been voted the Co-operative Group’s Charity of the Year 2007 following a vote by over 90,000 members and staff across the Co-operative family of businesses.

This was the largest vote turnout so far for the Co-op’s Charity of the Year. The organisation aims to raise £1 million to support The Children’s Society and its partners, Aberlour in Scotland, Extern in Northern Ireland and Tros Gynnal in Wales. The Co-op employs over 69,000 people and has more than 3,000 high street outlets.

Guy McCracken, Chief Executive Food Retail at the Co-operative Group said: “The Co-operative membership scheme is much more than a conventional loyalty scheme… The Charity of the Year campaign is a very practical way in which members and staff can get involved both in stores and across the rest of our business.”

To be eligible for the Charity of the Year award, charities must meet at least one of the five Co-operative Group social goals themes. The Children’s Society, Aberlour, Extern and Tros Gynnal were short-listed following their positive work in tackling social inclusion in the UK and demonstrating a commitment to help people from all sectors of society including those who are disadvantaged, have disabilities or affected by poverty.
