Financial services company Zurich’s Community Trust has committed to matching public donations to the Observer Christmas Appeal up to £100,000, the amount raised last year.

The funds raised will give support to families dealing with a mental health issue via three charities – Family Welfare Association, Place2Be and Rethink.

The Observer’s Christmas Appeal launched on 3 December.

Head of Zurich’s Community Trust, Pam Webb said: “Our £100,000 matching to The Observer Appeal is the start of a longer term programme, Mental Health and Families. We are very keen to increase the impact we can make by engaging other funders and philanthropists to work with us.”

She added: “We bring not only money, expertise in grant making but also business skills to the table. Additional funds in this huge area of need would increase the impact significantly.”

Zurich’s Community Trust, a registered charity funded by pre-tax profits and donations from company staff, provides an umbrella for all Zurich’s community involvement in the UK. It aims to help tackle drug misuse in families, social exclusion and the most vulnerable older people’s issues. In addition, there is a programme in southern India with personal development opportunities for employees.

Mental Health and Families is the latest programme as other programmes come to their natural end.
