The Directory of Social Change has published the 2006/07 edition of its bi-annual directory A Guide to Grants for Individuals in Need.

This funding guide, now in its tenth edition, gives details of a wide range of funds and other support available for the relief of individual poverty and hardship. It contains updated information on over £260 million in financial help available to individuals from over 2,280 non-statutory sources. About 50 trusts are listed for the first time.

The guide is a key reference book for advice and social workers, as well as for individuals themselves and those concerned for their welfare.

Alan French, DSC researcher and co-editor of the guide, explained: “Grants made by charities range from £10 food vouchers to larger contributions such as grants for washing machines, wheelchairs and house adaptations, although few will cover the whole cost of these. It is important to stress that most trusts in the guide can only give supplementary help.”

The directory is indexed to help readers identify and locate the information quickly. Its listings include:

* illness and disability charities
* occupational charities
* service and ex-service charities
* religious charities
* local charities

DSC say that every trust has been contacted and “all their entries covering application procedures, eligibility criteria and contact addresses have been updated in this new edition.”

The book also features practical advice on selecting the right source of funds, ./guidance on how to make an effective application, and lists of advisory organisations for health, welfare, sickness and disability.

“A Guide to Grants for Individuals in Need” is published at £34.95.

The information in “A Guide to Grants for Individuals in Need” is also published online by the DSC. Until the end of January 2007, DSC is offering an annual single user license for this site at £99 plus VAT, a reduction on the standard £150 plus VAT.
