Shortlist announced for Charities' Online Accounts Awards 2006

African Children’s Education Trust, Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir and Islamic Relief are among 14 charities who have been shortlisted for the Charities’ Online Accounts Awards 2006 because of financial reporting transparency.
Designed to raise the standard of online reporting in the charitable sector, the Awards recognise charities for the availability, clarity, accessibility and “web friendliness” of their online financial reports. The competition is sponsored by CAF (Charities Aid Foundation) and supported by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).
An independent panel of judges have drawn up a shortlist from five categories, and the charity with the most transparent and technically accurate accounts in each category will receive £5,000. Second and third place charities will receive £750 and £250 respectively.

This year’s shortlisted charities are:

Plan UK â–ª Age Concern England â–ª Islamic Relief
Category A (charities with an income over £2m)
Citizens Advice â–ª Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) â–ª Esmee Fairbairn Foundation
Category B (charities with an income between £500k and £2m)
Deafness Research UK â–ª Charity Finance Directors Group
Category C (charities with an income between £100k and £500k)
Sangat Advice Centre â–ª Unique â–ª Parochial Church Council of St Luke Great Ilford
Category D (charities with an income below £100k)
Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir â–ª 2nd/1st Hurst Scout Group â–ª African Children’s Education Trust.
Graham Ward, Chair of the Judging Panel, commented: “We’ve seen a fantastic number of charities enter this year’s Awards and in many cases the standards have been excellent. Some charities, however, are still failing to embrace the opportunities of online communication.
“These organisations will simply lose out as internet usage continues to grow and potential donors demand ever greater and ever clearer information on the activities of charities before they decide to give.”
The winning charities will be announced at an awards ceremony on 29 November at Chartered Accountants’ Hall, Moorgate Place, London.
Both the ceremony and an accompanying seminar are free to attend.
