Idealware offers guide to nonprofits on getting started with blogging

Idealware, the US service that providers practical reviews and articles about software of interest to nonprofits, has published a guide to getting started with blogging software, with analysis and reviews of the seven most popular blogging tools.

Idealware’s report examines seven blogging platforms – Blogger, LiveJournal,Typepad, Movable Type, WordPress, ExpressionEngine, and TextPattern. Its researchers chose these tools “because they are the ones most commonly used to create a typical nonprofit blog”, at least as reported by bloggers included in the Nonprofit Blog Exchange.

The free report from Idealware looks at these tools’ features and functions, suggests how to choose a blogging platform, offers summary reviews and recommendations, and concludes with a list of additional resources.

The recommendations are particularly useful, as they suggest different tools for different needs. For example, if you “need to get up and running quickly, without technical skills, and the blog’s appearance isn’t important” then Idealware recommends WordPress (hosted) or TypePad.

Alternatively, if your organisation “is pretty technical all around, and [you] want the most flexibility in a blogging tool,” the Idealware recommends WordPress (installed), TextPattern, or ExpressionEngine.

While Idealware’s reports are targeted at a US audience, given that these tools are used internationally, the report will be of practical use to UK charities interested in trying out the potential of blogging.
