St Teresa’s Hospice has caught World Cup fever thanks to a free £50 bet from Ladbrokes bookmakers.
Jane Bradshaw, Director of St Teresa’s Hospice, was invited to the Ladbrokes betting shop in Salters Lane in Darlington, to place the bet and predict who will win the World Cup.
After consulting with Hospice guests and staff, as well as the Ladbrokes’ experts, Jane placed the bet for England to win the tournament. With odds of 7/1 this would generate winnings of £400 to help fund the Hospice’s palliative and respite care services.
The Darlington-based Hospice, which relies almost entirely on fundraising and charitable donations, has also applied for additional funding from the ‘Ladbrokes in the Community Charity Trust’ (LICCT), which raises much-needed funds for local community charities and good causes.
Jane Bradshaw, Director of St Teresa’s Hospice, said: This is perhaps one of the most unusual fundraising activities the Hospice has taken part in and everyone is really looking forward to it. We will all be supporting the England team in Germany and we will now be watching the World Cup with even more anticipation.”
Joan Machin, Manageress of Ladbrokes Salters Lane, said: I am a strong supporter of St Teresa’s Hospice and I know that the majority of people within the Darlington community would agree that it is a very worthy cause.
Almost everyone knows someone, or can relate to someone who is suffering due to illness and St Teresa’s Hospice is always there to help those who need it most.”
