NEWS RELEASE
ST TERESA’S HOSPICE THANKS ELEVEN LOCAL SCHOOLS
06/06/06
St Teresa’s Hospice has thanked 11 local schools, which raised more than £1,600 during the charity’s first ever Rag Week.
Representatives from Branksome Comprehensive School, Carmel Technology College, Darlington College of Technology, Haughton Community School, Hummersknott School and Language College, Hurworth House, Polam Hall School, Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, Sunnydale School, Teesdale Comprehensive School in Shildon and Wensleydale School in Leyburn, were each presented with a fundraising certificate at a special presentation event held at Sherwoods’ car showroom in Darlington.
The schools each hosted a variety of activities during the Raising and Giving (RAG) Week, including a non-uniform day, collection buckets and the selling of St Teresa’s wrist bands. Together they raised a total of £1,652.23.
All proceeds will be used directly to help fund St Teresa’s Hospice’s palliative and respite care services, including in-patient, at home care and counselling for individuals coping with a life-limiting illness.
The Hospice, which is part of the Darlington Charity Partnership, offers these services free-of-charge to anyone in the South Durham and North Yorkshire regions.
Jane Bradshaw, St Teresa’s Hospice Director said: St Teresa’s Hospice relies very heavily on the kindness and generosity of the local community and it is particularly heart-warming that so many schools have offered their support.
The aim of the Rag Week was to inform more young people about the work we are doing in their area and offer them a relaxed and fun way of getting involved. Their hard-work has been greatly received by everyone involved with the Hospice and I am sure they will serve as an inspiration to other fundraisers.”
Marie Green, Head of Polam Hall School, said: When we were first approached by St Teresa’s Hospice and they told us of their plans for a Rag Week, we did not hesitate to pledge our support. The Hospice is a very worthwhile cause and one which means a lot to the Darlington community. The staff and pupils at Polam Hall thoroughly enjoyed the fundraising activities and were delighted to be involved.”
Alasdair MacConachie OBE, Managing Director of Sherwoods and Chairman of St Teresa’s Hospice, said: I have been a supporter of the Hospice for many years now and I was touched to see so many schools taking part in this fundraising drive. The representatives who came to the showroom to receive their certificates were justifiably proud of their achievements and I hope their involvement continues in the future.”
