International Fund a 'waste of money'

The US government’s allocation of funds to the International Fund for Ireland, which has supported a huge range of community and economic initiatives in Ireland, is a waste of money according to a citizens’ watchdog group. This year’s allocation to the IFI is $13.5 million.

Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) listed a number of IFI funded projects it considered wasteful including Newcastle YMCA, Creggan Community Cafe, and Donegal Town Waterbus. It heaped its biggest criticism on IFI support for the World Toilet Summit in Belfast which it described as ‘flushing away’money.

The IFI recently changed its strategy to focus more on reconciliation issues.
