Northern Ireland’s biggest private charitable trust, Ulster Garden Villages, has appointed a new chairman following the retirement of its long time chair, Sir Desmond Lorimer. The new chair is Tony Hopkins.

Sir Desmond, who was active in the fields of accountancy, manufacturing and banking, had been chairman of Ulster Garden Villages since 1979. The trust provides funding in a number of areas, including health, education, heritage and youth projects. It has a small funding programme (under £5,000) and has given grants up £1 milliion.

Tony Hopkins, who has a background in accountancy and economic development, has been a board member of UGV for a number of years and has a range of directorships, including chairman of Laganiside Corporation.
