Fraudsters acquire £2.6 million from Awards for All Lottery grants

Howard Lake | 21 July 2005 | News

Third Sector reports that the Awards for All grants programme has been defrauded of at least £2.6 million by fraudsters running fictitious charity projects.

The figure was announced as £2,607,000 in a statement to Parliament by Tessa Jowell, the culture, media and sport secretary. So far 19 men and one woman have been arrested in relation to the investigation. Ms Jowell admitted that the figure might rise as the investigation, launched after the scam was reported in September 2004, continues.

Third Sector reports that charities as well as Lottery bodies were targeted by the fraudsters.
