Hoax email appeal for London bombings victims

Howard Lake | 11 July 2005 | News

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Australians have been receiving hoax email appeals asking for donations to the Red Cross in response to the terrorist bombings in London on 7 July.

The emails, which originate in the USA, according to Australian Federal Police, use graphics and text taken without permission from the British Red Cross’ website. They then ask for the recipient’s credit card details.

The British Red Cross told the newspaper that it had not sent out any such email appeals.
The British Red Cross is running its legitimate appeal in the wake of the disaster and is accepting donations online.
