Institute of Fundraising's National Convention opens in London

The Institute of Fundraising’s three-day National Convention gets underway today at the Hilton London Metropole.

Europe’s largest event for fundraisers, according to the Institute, comprises a programme of 168 workshops, the national awards that recognise excellence in fundraising, a major debate on giving, a daily motivational plenary session, and an exhibition of suppliers.

The workshop programme is divided into eight tracks – current affairs, community and volunteers, corporate trusts and major gifts, strategic planning and business management, communications and PR, direct marketing and donor development, personal development and legacies.
The Giving Debate focuses on the question giving in modern times is often dramatic, but does it match the vision and impact of Victorian philanthropy? Panel members include Baroness Morgan of Drefelin, former CEO of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, TV historian and author Dr Tristram Hunt, and Sir Tom Shebbeare, Director of Charities for HRH The Prince of Wales.

Delegates attending the daily motivational plenary will hear presentations from three of the most engaging speakers on fundraising – Bernard Ross, Director of The Management Centre; Ken Burnett, Chairman of Cascaid Group; and Tony Elischer, Managing Director of THINK Consulting Solutions.

This is the Institute’s 16th annual convention. It has made much of its move from Birmingham to London as an attempt “to bring the event closer to a larger number of fundraisers”. The Hilton London Metropole is situated just across the road from Edgware Road tube station, where one of the suicide bombers struck on 7 July. The hotel operated as a temporary triage and first aid station in the aftermath.
