Lottery grant to help Time Banks promote volunteering

Howard Lake | 9 May 2005 | News

Time Banks UK is to use a new £321,164 grant from the Big Lottery Fund to let more people know how to put their volunteering time to use for good causes.

The Lottery funding for Time Banks UK will help inform people about the scheme and how they can get involved. The organisation says there is something to suit all ages and abilities and volunteers provide a range of assistance. This could be in the shape of DIY, help with childrens, exercise, shopping, crafts, going to the park and cooking.

There are currently more than four thousand people in the UK involved with their local communities. Time Banks UK are going to use part of their funding to create regional hubs which will support groups that want to establish a new unit in their local area and provide ongoing help and advice so as to ensure it is successful.

It is also aiming to increase membership by 20,000 of people from disadvantaged communities who would benefit from the boost to their life opportunities, skills and employability.

The funding is one of seven grants totalling £2,072,204 awarded today from the Fund’s Strategic programme. So far, this programme has funded 1,401 projects with grants worth more than £284 million.
