Nearly three in 10 Americans say they've given to tsunami appeals

An Associated Press poll reports that nearly three in 10 Americans say that they have donated to the Asian tsunami disaster appeals.
According to the poll a further 37% of Americans say that they plan to give to the appeals. Nevertheless, initial donations to the tsunami appeals have not matched those to the appeals set up in the wake of the attacks in the USA of 11 September 2001.
The poll, conducted for Associated Press by Ipsos-Public Affairs, reports that around three quarters of Americans who donated gave under $100, with 5% given $500 or more.

One third of respondents didn’t say how much they gave, which is either reticence, or an indication that they might not have given. Research this week in the UK suggests that UK donors report giving substantially more to the appeals than has actually been received.
The poll interviewed 1,001 adults from 3 to 5 January 2005.
Since then, the total given in cash and goods by individuals, corporations and foundations has risen to about $322 million, according to the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.
