New report for donors and grantmakers on growing older in deprived areas
Research charity New Philanthropy Capital has published “Grey matters: growing older in deprived areas – a guide for donors and grant-makers”.
New Philanthropy Capital’s latest report is based on six months of research and visits to over 50 organisations. It examines how charitable organisations in the UK are working to alleviate poverty, isolation and exclusion amongst older people in the UK.
The report concludes that, in light of the under-funding that this part of the charity sector experiences, “there is a clear and urgent imperative for independent funding”. It recommends that funders take action to support the older people’s sector by:

- funding the work of older people’s charities in deprived areas
- supporting a range of activities and services and encouraging holistic approaches
- funding development programmes for charities to widen their scope
- supporting activities and services addessing both third age and fourth age needs
- facilitating the ongoing development of charities
New Philanthropy Capital also reiterates its recommendations made in earlier charity sector reports:
- unrestricted, long-term funding, including ongoing support to aid development, sustainability and capacity-building
- full cost recovery by charities
- surer funding arrangements for contracted-out services
