The BBC is to change the name of its iCan service, the Web-based initiative that aims to help people get involved in civic life.

Although the site is under a year old, the BBC said: “we’re looking for a name which expresses better the breadth and purpose of the site, and which attracts people to get involved.”

The site is attracting 100,000 visitors a month, say the BBC.

The site’s name was bound to cause confusion, as there is already a very well established children’s communication charity called ICAN, and now an Ican Foundation. It is odd that the BBC either failed to take these into consideration or just ignored them.

So, if you have any ideas what to call the site, the BBC would like to hear from you by 25 October 2004.
