4p for a flight and a £1 donation to charity on top?

Howard Lake | 28 July 2004 | News

The economics of low-cost airlines still seem to defy commonsense. Budget airline bmibaby this week offered some flights for as little as 4p and pledged to donate £1 per booking to a Birmingham hospital.

In fact, that donation offer was a one-day only offer to promote the airline’s new routes from Birmingham International. Airport. Still, on the launch day, the airline was offering a few one-way flights to Europe for just 4p and making the £1 donation for every booking made from Birmingham International Airport to the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. That certainly is a loss leader, but one that benefited the hospital.
