Stairway to fundraising success at Chelsea

Howard Lake | 13 July 2004 | News

An enterprising exhibitor at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show raised £1,588 for the
RHS Bicentenary Appeal by charging people to climb the stairs to his display’s gazebo.

Gardener Richard Drake encouraged visitors to make a minimum £1 donation to climb up the spiral staircase of a double layered ‘Belvedere’ gazebo on his stand. Those who climbed up got a fine view of the flower show. BBC TV’s Jenny Bond even introduced one of her daily reports from the top of the tower.

Richard’s initiative demonstrates that there are always new and different ways to generate income for charities from an event.
