Institute of Fundraising seeks feedback on volunteer code

The Institute of Fundraising has launched a three-month consultation on a draft code of practice on volunteer fundraising.

The code aims to set out best practice in managing volunteer activity and includes a section on the specific issues that arise when celebrities engage in volunteer fundraising activity.

Andrew Watt, Head of Policy, said: “Volunteer Fundraising is probably the most prevalent form of fundraising activity in the UK. It is important that volunteer fundraising activities are conducted properly to protect both the volunteer and the organisation. We welcome comments on this draft Code from any interested party.”

You can view or download the draft code together with details of how to respond to the consultation on the Institute’s Web site.

A model letter of agreement to accompany this code is currently in development. It will illustrate the information an organisation might wish to convey to a volunteer fundraiser who is acting in support of the organisation.

The consultation period will run from 1 July 2004 to 30 September 2004.

Rob Jackson, Chair of the working party that developed the Code, will today give a presentation on the Code at the Institute of Fundraising’s National Convention.

The Institute’s 22 Codes of Fundraising Practice represent the standards set for fundraisers in the UK. Each Code covers a separate fundraising technique and provides not only information on relevant areas of the law but also the best practice that the fundraising sector has set itself to ensure the highest standards.
