The Quakers have published a book by Quakers who reject the National Lottery for religious reasons yet work in voluntary organisations that receive Lottery grants.

The book, “Role Over? National Lottery Funding and the Quaker Testimony Against Gambling”, explains the dilemma faced by Quakers who object to gambling but whose charity employers receive funding from the National Lottery.

Some contributors have resigned from charities rather than see them accept Lottery funding, whereas others have chosen to continue in Lottery-funded organisations. The book highlights the ethical problems that the National Lottery poses for Quakers.

In particular the book criticises the “accelerating substition of National Lottery funds for planned public funding of important social projects”.

The book costs £6 and is available from Quaker Books.
