New Web search engine from Amazon

Howard Lake | 27 April 2004 | News

Amazon has entered the Web search engine market with its new search engine A9.com. It’s not clear if it will become a genuine rival to Google, but it would certainly make sense to make sure your organisation’s Web site is listed in the results.

A9.com, named after the number of letters in the word ‘algorithm’, is a new search engine from Amazon.com. Currently in beta testing it will power searches on Amazon.com and on “other Web sites”, according to the company’s promotional information.

While many charities and organisations focus on achieving high rankings on Google searches, this new entry to the market is certainly worth watching, given its parent company’s reputation. It is important not to focus too much on one search engine as a method of driving traffic to a Web site: new search tools do continue to appear.

A quick search for “fundraising” shows that UK Fundraising is ranked top on A9.com, as it is on Google.com.
