Co-op movement expert recommended as new Chair of NCVO

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations’ (NCVO) Board of Trustees has written to its 3,300 members recommending that Sir Graham Melmoth succeed Lord Warner as Chair of NCVO.

Lord Warner, NCVO’s Chair since November 2001, was made Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Department of Health in June obliging him to step down. The Trustees agreed to recommend Sir Graham to the membership at last week’s Trustee Board meeting.

Sir Graham retired in September 2002 as Chief Executive of Co-operative Group. He joined the Co-operative Wholesale Society in

1975 and was Secretary of the organisation until being appointed Chief Executive in 1996. He has also been involved in a variety of voluntary sector activities. He is a member of the Council of NACRO, Chairman of the Advisory Group on Restorative Justice, a trustee of the New Lanark Conservation

Trust, and until recently was a member of the Council for Public Concern at

Work. He has been a member of the Business in the Community Rural Task Force

and a member of the Chairman’s Group of the British Retail Consortium.

Stuart Etherington, NCVO Chief Executive said: “The voluntary sector must start to

look beyond the traditional confines of the sector for the expertise it needs to face the challenges ahead. I believe that his extensive knowledge and experience of both the co-operative movement and emerging social

enterprise agenda will make Sir Graham a hugely valuable leader for NCVO.”

If no objections are raised Graham Melmoth will be confirmed as Chair at the EGM that will take place at NCVO’s Annual

Conference on the 18th February 2004.
