Scope tests texting on the street and doorstep

Disability charity Scope has been testing combining texting with street and doorstep fundraising.

Scope worked with its professional fundraising agency Fruitful Fundraising and its technology partner SMStextgiving to test giving people an option of giving or campaigning through texting.

Texting offers a useful backup suggestion should people in the street choose not to give via Direct Debit. Of course, many street and doorstep fundraisers engage in conversations with members of the public who are unable to commit through Direct Debit, but are still positive about supporting the charity. Texting appears to offer a positive alternative way of getting involved. Members of the public are giving information about how to get involved via texting so they can take it away and do it whenever they wish to.

Louise Cook, Head of Development at Fruitful Fundraising, said: “Reaction from fundraisers and the public has been extremely positive. Comments from members of the public have included ‘Pleased to take a card’, and ‘reflects well on Scope’. We are always looking at ways in which dialogue marketing can evolve and using mobile phone technology allows charities to provide a further fundraising chance for the public.

“We are delighted to partner SMStextgiving as they are a not-for-profit organisation set up especially to facilitate charities to use this technology.”

Geleeta Anderson from Scope said: “We see texting as a way to make every interaction with a member of the public even more meaningful – enabling us to help inform the public about Scope’s work.”
