Dell USA to recycle PCs for charities – at a price

Howard Lake | 30 September 2003 | News

Dell USA is responding to environmentalists’ criticisms and will recycle customers’ old PCs for schools and hospitals. But it will charge them for the privilege.

It’s difficult giving away old PCs to charities and good causes. Even if you are offering a relatively recent machine in good condition you usually have to deliver it yourself.

Dell USA, as a major manufacturer of PCs, has only just bent to environmentalists’ requests and agreed to recycle customers’ old machines and give them to schools and hospitals. However, it will charge $49 (about £30) to do so. In other words, you have to pay to give.
