£50 million from Department of Health for palliative care
The Department of Health has announced an extra £50 million a year for specialist palliative care services for people with life-threatening and terminal illness. Britain’s oldest hospice has welcomed the news.
On 23 December 2002, Public Health Minister Hazel Blears announced that there will be a central pot of money exclusively for specialist palliative care for three years from 2003/04.
The funding will be allocated by a national partnership group, including representatives from all levels of the NHS and a wide range of voluntary sector organisations. The group will assess and approve the specialist and palliative care plans prepared by local health communities and their voluntary sector partners.

These new funding arrangements will enable local palliative care service providers to work together to build on their existing services and plan for the future.
Trinity Hospice, Britain’s oldest hospice, has welcomed the announcement. Chief Executive Anne Hooper said: “palliative care has been the poor relation in healthcare services for some time now, so this ring-fenced pot of money is a welcome move in the right direction.”
