ThirdSector on dot com downturn in voluntary sector

Howard Lake | 3 May 2001 | News

ThirdSector says that “the commercial dotcom bust has hit websites that provide services to charities.”

In the current issue of ThirdSector magazine, Matthew Little summarises the problems experienced by dot coms serving the charity sector. He relates the experiences of charity ISP Care4free, click-to-give-for-free site eGiving.com, and the ncvo.buy.co.uk e-procurement site.

Little interviews Gareth Edwards, national fundraising development manager at RNIB, Sarah Hughes, head of new media at Charities Aid Foundation, and UK Fundraising’s Howard Lake.

Sarah Hughes said: “Internationally, failures are higher in the not-for-profit sector than in the commercial sector. Over a period of a year, you would expect that of 20 new ventures, 12 will go bust and 8 will survive. But in the States, very few have survived – 15 out of 20 have failed.”
