Sainsbury's and Guardian launch Charity Awards 2001

The Charity Awards 2001 will recognise charities for their community achievements.

Sainsbury’s and The Guardian have announced the Charity Awards 2001. These are designed to recognise charities’ community achievements, contribution to social welfare, or innovative projects that can be replicated. Five winners will receive £5,000 each together with publicity in The Guardian and on SocietyGuardian.co.uk.

The Awards are open to UK social welfare charities which can demonstrate excellence and achievement in what they do. Eligible charities must also have been registered in the UK for more than two years and have an annual income between £5,000 and £1 million.

The judging panel will be chaired by Simon Armson, chief executive of the Samaritans. Panellists will be Naomi Eisenstadt, chief executive of Sure Start; Nick Hardwick, chief executive of the Refugee Council; David Brindle, editor of Guardian Society; and Jan Shawe, director of corporate relations at J Sainsbury plc.

Applications should be submitted by 5pm on Friday 29 June 2001.
