BT makes profit out of Comic Relief

Howard Lake | 19 March 2001 | News

British Telecom has admitted that it has done rather well out of Comic Relief’s use of premium rate telephone numbers for fundraising. Celebrity Big Brother alone made around £720,000, of which £280,000 (pre-VAT) will be kept by BT.

However, BT made clear that it is prevented from donating its services to any organisation, even a charity, under the terms of the company’s licence with telephone regulator Oftel.
