The RNLI is to receive just over half the estate of the late Cynthia Watson which will be worth over £1 million, enough to help the charity to buy a new lifeboat. All bequests often carry an interesting personal story, but this one is more unusual than most.

Edward Wakewalker of the RNLI did well in discussing the unusual circumstances of the donation with The Times, discreetly balancing his “he or she” and “his or her.” “It’s a shame in some ways” said Mr Wakewalker, “that we don’t know more about Cynthia or Peter and his or her background.”
