Post Office supports Samaritans' use of e-mail

The Post Office has renewed its funding for the Samaritans and is expanding its support of the charity’s e-mail facilities. During 1999 the charity received over 25,000 e-mails, an increase of 60%.

The Post Office has renewed its funding for the Samaritans and is expanding its support of the charity’s e-mail facilities. During 1999 the charity received over 25,000 e-mails, an increase of 60%.

E-mail befriending began in 1994, with demand for the service growing enormously over the last two years. Today, volunteers in 20 of The Samaritans’ 203 branches are providing emotional support on-line. More than half those who e-mailed The Samaritans stated they were feeling suicidal at the time.
