Have I got old news for you
Third Sector magazine (6 August 1998) carried a news report on the problems that PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) suffered when they failed to register their initials as an Internet domain name.
The fact that “People for Eating Tasty Animals” got there before them with www.peta.org caused not a little embarrassment.
The story always gets a laugh in Howard Lake’s Internet fundraising training sessions, and has done since the incident occurred three years ago in 1995. Howard included it in his book Direct Connection’s Guide to Fundraising on the Internet, published in 1996.
