Fundraising on a plate

A special fundraising service in a Bradford church has raised £600,000 in two hours. One third was given in cash and the remainder pledged from sales of shares, cars, jewellery and other valuables.

The Abundant Life Church had given up fundraising from jumble sales and sponsored events because they were so tiring for the whole congregation. Instead, the Reverend Paul Scanlon and the 30 couples, who are leaders at the church, planned a special fundraising service. It took them three months to build up to the event. Rev Scanlon and his wife gave £15,000 and the leaders as a whole donated £160,000. They then challenged the 750-strong congregation to contribute, which they did. The money is being raised to fund a £1 million 1,500-seat auditorium for church services and other events, with a gym, conference rooms and other facilities.
