JustGiving creates new app for new Facebook Timeline

Howard Lake | 27 April 2012 | News

Individual fundraisers and charity supporters can now add charitable donations to their Facebook Timeline following the creation of a new app from JustGiving.
The free tool lets people share their fundraising and giving activity with their Facebook friends, encouraging others to give.
As well as helping people showcase their generosity, it will allow fundraisers to thank the people who have supported them using a ‘thank’ action.

The value of Facebook to JustGiving fundraisers

The first tools from JustGiving that prompted people to share their donations with their friends via social media were launched in September 2011. In the seven months since then, this ‘social commerce’ activity has generated £1 million for charities using JustGiving. In addition, Facebook drove over one million donors to JustGiving during 2011.
According to JustGiving data, each viral Facebook share is worth an average of £5 in donations to a fundraiser’s charity.
Currently around one in 10 donors share their donation on Facebook. JustGiving expects the new Timeline app to increase that.
Facebook is evidently a key driver in helping fundraisers to share their JustGiving pages with likely supporters, namely their friends and contacts. Indeed, JustGiving is one of the first brands to develop an app using Facebook’s Opengraph technology: the app was launched today at The Next Web conference in Amsterdam by Christian Hernandez, Facebook’s Director, Platform Partnerships, EMEA.
JustGiving Product Manager Jonathan Waddingham explained: “By launching our new Timeline app, we aim to increase the number of people sharing their charitable giving online and increase the impact of those shares. We know that sharing drives donations – and by helping people to give a public display of recognition to their supporters, we predict this will help raise even more for worthy causes.”

How to access the app

Users will be prompted to use JustGiving’s timeline app when they donate through the site.
