Businessman makes £1m donation to University of Ulster

A Northern Ireland company founded by one of Northern Ireland’s wealthiest men, Edward Haughey, is giving £1 million to the University of Ulster. The money will be used to establish a Chair in Pharmaceutical Science at UU’s Coleraine campus. It will be known as the Norbrook Laboratories Professorship.
Newry businessman Lord Ballyedmond (Edward Haughey) was listed in 2009 as the second wealthiest man in Northern Ireland, worth an estimated £440 million. In the past he has been associated with a number of large donations to the Conservative Party.
University of Ulster Professor Tony Bjourson said: “We are very honoured to have received such a generous donation and that Norbrook Laboratories are supporting the university’s activities in biomedical sciences, and, in particular, pharmaceutical science research. We are extremely excited about the impact of this important partnership with such a highly successful global company. The donation will directly fund a prestigious Norbrook Chair in Pharmaceutical Science.”
Fellow South Down man, Gerard O’Hare, is the chair of the University’s Foundation board.
