Capturing the spirit of volunteering competition

A photographic competition has been launched by Volunteering England together with the Guardian Newspaper and Dixons to show the incredible and varied work of the UK’s millions of volunteers. The competition is part of this year’s Volunteers’ Week 1-7 June 2004 celebrations and is being judged by the award-winning photographer Andy Hollingworth. It is open to anyone with a camera* and encourages people to use their creative skills to capture the ‘spirit of volunteering’.
Andy Hollingworth will be judging the photographs, that fall into three categories:
1. Young volunteers (under 25 years old)
2. Volunteers in sport
3. Volunteers and the environment (from campaigning to conservation).
Photographs must have been taken between 1 May 2003 and 1 May 2004 and not previously published. The deadline for the competition is on the 14th of May 2004. Details of the competition and an application form can be found on the Volunteers’ Week website

Andy has photographed some of the most famous and celebrated comedians of British history and his work has been featured in the National Portrait Gallery, The Independent and numerous photographic magazines. His unique style has enabled him to bring out engaging and captivating pictures of Britain’s finest comedians. Andy’s advice to potential entrants is:
“You’ve got to be in it to win it. Take risks. The competition is to show people being involved in different types of volunteering, such as the environment and sport. Try to get some emotion into the photographs and show the difference that volunteers make to people’s lives. Contrast is good: go for different age groups or interesting settings”.
The photographic competition is being supported by Dixons, who are offering prizes for the winner and two runners-up in each category. The winner of the best picture taken by an under 25 year old will be invited to spend the day with a Guardian photographer and the best overall winner will have a picture of volunteers in action for a voluntary organisation of their choice taken by Andy Hollingsworth.
Volunteering is varied and diverse, this gives entrants numerous opportunities to show what it means to volunteer. Entrants will be required to use their imagination and creativity to capture the true essence of volunteering in this unique and exciting competition.
