Horwath Clark Whitehill is continuing its support of grass-roots sport in the region by making a donation to one of County Durham’s longest-running rugby organisations.
Part of the money from the donation to Durham County Rugby Union Referees Society will be used to buy brand new referee strips for the society’s 75 members.
Founded in 1895, the society sources and registers officials to referee league matches at all levels including the national leagues. Many of the officials represent the North East’s finest talent who have refereed high-profile matches in other parts of the UK and abroad, including South Africa.
Last year Hartlepool-based Horwath Clark Whitehill made a similar donation to the society, which used the money to help fund its day-to-day operations.
Peter Olsen, chairman of Horwath Clark Whitehill in the North East, has had a long-standing interest in rugby and used to play the game regularly in his younger days. He was also the treasurer for West Hartlepool Rugby Club from 1977 to 1999 before resuming this role last year.
Peter said: â€I got to know the society through my work with West Hartlepool Rugby Club and I am more than happy to support the good work that it has been carrying out for over 100 years. Rugby is a flourishing and popular sport in the region and the infrastructure that we have in place is helping to attract a growing number of young people to the game.â€
Dave Sawyer, treasurer of the society, added: “The society attracts and retains the best officials to ensure that grass-roots rugby is played and managed to a high standard. We rely on generous donations from local organisations like Horwath Clark Whitehill and I’m sure that the members will be impressed with their smart new attire.”
