Epilepsy charities to merge

Howard Lake | 2 April 2007 | News

The Epilepsy Research Foundation and the Fund for Epilepsy have merged and the new charity, Epilepsy Research UK launched on 1 April.

This is now the only national charity in the UK dedicated to epilepsy research and it aims to substantially increase the amount of funding to this area of medical research.

The two charities will consolidate running costs and combine knowledge and expertise for the benefit of the research. Both have a long and successful track record in identifying and funding research. The Fund for Epilepsy made grants betweeen 1999 and 2006 for £1.2m and the Epilepsy Foundation has allocated more than £3m to research projects since it was set up in 1991.

The future strategy and organisational structure of the new charity will be decided over the next three months, during which time Mike Lancaster and Leigh Slocombe will be acting as co-directors: Lancaster on the strategy side and Slocombe on operations.

The new charity is looking to double its fundraising income over the next three years from a combined figure of £830,000 to between £1.5m and £2m, which means it is unlikely that any fundraising jobs will be at risk.
