DEC announces emergency appeal following Nepal earthquake

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), representing leading UK aid agencies, has announced a joint fundraising appeal to help those affect by the Nepal earthquake that struck west of the capital Kathmandu on Saturday.
The DEC Nepal Earthquake Appeal launches today on all major UK broadcasters including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky, starting with radio appeals.

The quake registered 7.8 on the Richter scale. The DEC says that 5.3 million people live in the areas directly affected. Remote villages have still not been reached as they are cut off by landslides and communications systems have been destroyed.
DEC chief executive Saleh Saeed said:
“The pictures and stories coming out of Nepal show families ripped apart by this disaster. Survivors are in need of medical help, shelter, food and water. In many cases they have lost everything and our members are ready to help them rebuild.”

Telephone lines open
The donation line opened at midday on Monday, accepting donations on 0370 60 60 900, and online donations were being handled from the start.
As usual, postal donations can be made by cheque, and donations can be made at any high street bank and at Post Office counters. Donations by text can be made: to donate £5 by text send the word SUPPORT to 70000. Texts are free and donations will be added to the bill.

Matched giving from DFID
The UK government will once again match fund the first £5 million in donations made by the public.
